BJJ - BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU

A Martial art with its origins in Japan and modified in Brazil, BJJ is a grappling art which employs the use of takedowns, throws, joint locks and choke holds with the aim of subduing and controlling the opponent. The focus on the use of leverage means that technique is favoured over strength, which has led to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu sometimes being referred to as ‘Human Chess’.

Practitioners wear the Traditional ‘Gi’ (from the Japanese word ‘Dougi’ or ‘Training uniform’) during practice.  Techniques utilise the Gi to grip, control, throw, sweep and submit their opponent.

Practitioners train in shorts and training top or ‘No Gi training uniform’. The absence of the Gi means that ‘Gi techniques’ are not possible in ‘No gi’ classes, therefore No Gi training is more akin to grappling and wrestling training, with the focus on No Gi submissions (joint locks and chokes which don’t utilise the Gi).

For advanced individuals only and full protective gear is required. Sparring is still controlled, however it is also full contact, so provides an opportunity to put the techniques learned from classes into practice.
